- Recent events have highlighted the vulnerability of GNSS satellites to jamming and spoofing
- LEO communications satellites offer an attractive alternative because of their improved link budget and greater immunity to ground-based jamming and interference
- Under the Sunrise Partnership Project, MAC Ltd contributed to a consortium led by Eutelsat to demonstrate that the OneWeb LEO communications satellites can be used to provide resilient time synchronisation
Southampton, 5 October 2026. Multiple Access Communications Limited (MAC Ltd) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its contribution to a project to develop a resilient timing synchronization solution that utilises the transmissions from Eutelsat’s OneWeb low earth orbit (LEO) communications satellites as signals of opportunity (SOOP). The project is part of Phase 3 of the Sunrise Partnership Project, with the European Space Agency, supported by the UK Space Agency, and it was delivered by a consortium consisting of several organisations from across the space sector led by Eutelsat.
MAC Ltd contributed its world leading expertise in the development of advanced signal processing solutions on software-defined radio platforms to derive synchronisation information from the signals received from Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO satellites.
Peter Gould, Managing Director, MAC Ltd explained “Given the vulnerability of global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS, to jamming and spoofing, it is vital that alternative position, navigation, timing and synchronisation solutions are developed to provide national resilience across a wide range of critical sectors including telecommunications, finance, utilities and defence. It has been a pleasure working with Eutelsat and the other consortium members on this project and we are very proud to have contributed to this important area of development.”
Rui Zuo, PNT Lead at Eutelsat added “It has been a pleasure working with MAC Ltd on this critical project and we are very pleased with what has been delivered."
