Wireless technology continues to advance at a breathtaking pace. New technical standards, pre-standard systems, and wholly proprietary systems such as FLASH-OFDM, are appearing more quickly than ever before. Existing standards are also evolving, with 3GPP2 having already developed the 1xEV-DO variant to target the demand for MBWA services, and 3GPP is developing an OFDM air interface to improve the spectral efficiency of UTRA.
There is likely to be a continuation of this trend for rapid technology innovation. Equipment manufacturers are eager to suggest that new enabling technologies can support new services, and stimulate and support user demand for wireless access without a need for additional spectrum. SDR and CR will make it easier for user equipment to support alternative transmission technologies, and permit dissimilar systems to coexist in common spectrum allocations.
